Back in December 2021, Nestlé challenged Empak to design a new coffee jar for 400g filled coffee.
The initial guidelines were to use the same finish and closure as used on the 200g coffee jars, as well as some height constraints to reduce filling line downtime and ultimately costs.
The iterative design process was quite challenging due to the guidelines and still being able to comply with technical specifications.
The first step was to perform an IS forming simulation, to estimate the new glass distribution and thicknesses.
To be able to do so, the glass plants where this project was being produced had to be taken into consideration, in terms of glass properties, forehearth settings, type of IS machine and cooling available.
With the achieved results, the second step was to perform FEA simulations to assess the jar's performance, during the handling stages, transport and filling line up until the supermarket shelves.

Ultimately, the jar was re-designed to ensure that technical specifications for impacts, transport and storage were met.

The results were validated during a trial and the jar was found within design specification, corroborating the FEA results.

Today, the first jars were filled and sent to shelves all across Australia.

From concept to the shelf in 10 months!!!

Empak held another Product Development & Mould Design Training.
This time, with Encirc and Vidrala, in the beautiful town of Enniskillen, Northern Ireland.

With an holistic approach, subjects like glass properties, analyzing an IS timing and even the impact of glass conditioning, gob temperature and delivery system, set the building blocks for a successful mould design.

As part of our tradition in these trainings, we invite the attendees to bring real case scenarios to challenge Empak's PAKForming Simulator and this time was no exception.
With such a beatiful scenery as background, our team even took the oportunity to go sight seeing!

Our deep thanks to the participants from Encirc and Vidrala which provided a huge level of passion and interest onto the subjects, something that truly makes Product Development and Mould Design such an important aspect on the Supply Chain of Container Glass Industry.
And also for their great Hospitality and provided conditions for the Training to be held!
